About 18th Annual IASJ Jazz Meeting

Jazz music as a classical value takes up one of the major places among musical styles in modern society and its significance continues to grow. This trend demands for a range of possibilities for the acquisition of jazz music education.

International Association of Schools of Jazz, (IASJ, www.iasj.com) is an organization acknowledged in the whole world. It was established by a prominent jazz saxophone player Dave Liebman in 1989. IASJ unites schools of jazz from more than 40 countries.

The main activity of IASJ is the promotion and co-production of the Annual IASJ Jazz Meeting with IASJ Member Schools. The meeting is held in a different country each year. RTTEMA became the Host School Coordinator for the 18th IASJ Jazz Meeting in Riga and for one week Riga will become the venue of the meeting of representatives of world jazz educational institutions and students. It is an honor for Riga, the capital city of Latvia, giving an important input in the development of jazz music education and promoting international acknowledgement and cooperation.

This event is the most effective way of implementing musical and social cooperation between representatives of different nationalities and cultures. Not only new ideas are produced during IASJ Jazz Meeting, but also new contacts and relations between young musicians, teachers and educational institutions are established, encouraging further activities in future; jazz methodology is developed; lectures, seminars and master classes are held, involving teachers, researchers and students from all over the world countries.

In the frames of the Meeting practical sessions of youth ensembles are carried out and best students of IASJ participate in concerts. Teachers and representatives of educational institutions are offered a program consisting of lectures, master classes and discussions on the topic of jazz education.

The organizers of the Meeting are RTTEMA in collaboration with the Municipality of Riga, the Ministry of Education and Science, State Culture Education Center, Culture and Education Support Organization, Muzikas Serviss Ltd., and with other institutions and organizations.

The President of Latvia, H.E. Dr. Valdis Zatlers, agreed to become the official patron of the 18th IASJ Jazz Meeting in Riga.
